Refuse & Recycling

Overview

The Department of Public Works is responsible for weekly pick-up and transportation of refuse and recycling materials from over 11,000 households across the community.  All collected solid waste is transported for proper disposal while recyclables are delivered to certified materials recovery facilities (MRFs), where they are sorted, processed, and sent for reuse in the manufacturing of new products.

Guidelines for Pick-up

Trash and recycling barrels should be placed at the curb by 7:00 AM on the collection day and removed from the curb by the end of that same day.  Do not place materials on the curb any earlier than 12 hours prior to your collection day.

Trash and recycling barrels that are overflowing (i.e. the lid is not completely closed) will not be picked up.  Further, any materials on the ground or on top of the trash/recycling barrels will not be picked up.

The following items are prohibited from disposal in trash and recyclable barrels.  Any barrels found with these items will not be picked up.  These items will need to be brought to the Twiss Street Transfer Station or to another disposal/recycling facility.

Household Batteries, Car Batteries, Motor Oil, Empty Propane Tanks, Tires (mounted or not mounted), Fluorescent Bulbs, Hazardous Materials, Waste from Humans or Pets Undergoing Chemotherapy, Paint (latex, oil-based, stains, urethanes), Metal, Construction Materials (sheetrock, lumber, plywood), Furniture (couches, chairs, bed frames, box springs mattresses, kitchen sets, cabinets), Appliances, TVs, and Computers.

Pick-up may be delayed due to inclement weather.  Contact DPW at 413-572-6226 if you are unsure of a change in schedule.

Single Stream Recycling

The City participates in a Single Stream recycling program, which allows all recyclable materials—paper, plastic, metal, and glass—to be placed together in one bin, eliminating the need for sorting. This system makes recycling more convenient for residents, encourages greater participation, and helps reduce collection costs. By recycling together, we can lower trash hauling expenses and increase recycling volumes throughout our City. If you are unsure whether an item is recyclable or not, please use the tool provided at the bottom of this page.

Bulk Pickup

Bulk Pickup is not available at this time.  Please check back as this page will be updated if/when future Bulk Pickup details are announced.
