Known as the "Whip City", Westfield has a long tradition of innovative businesses that began in the 19th century with the manufacturing of bricks, whips, and cigars that became economically important. At one point in the 1800s, Westfield was a prominent center of the buggy whip industry, and the city is still known as the "Whip City." Other firms produced bicycles, paper products, pipe organs, boilers and radiators, textile machinery, abrasives, wood products, and precision tools. Westfield transformed itself from an agricultural town into a thriving industrial city in the 19th century. Today, Westfield is known for its prominant position in the precision manufacturing industry.

Westfield’s friendly and supportive business climate provides sustainable growth opportunities not only helping local firms expand and prosper but also in attracting new business. Our city’s large industrial zone, excellent highway/rail/air access, fast track permitting, economic incentive program, proximity to the regions Knowledge Corridor of higher learning educational facilities and highly skilled labor force contribute towards the success of any business.
